Teaching our children the songs of our community
The Isaac J. Cabasso Hazzanut Academy teaches the children and teens of the Syrian Jewish community to sing the pizmonim, hear the maqamat, and lead the prayers — the way they have been sung in our synagogues for generations.
Congregation Beth Torah · 1061 Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn, NY 11230What we teach
Three parts of one sacred tradition
פזמונים
Pizmonim
The beloved Hebrew songs of our community, sung at the Shabbat table, at a brit milah, a bar mitzvah and a wedding.
מקאמות
Maqamat
The musical modes that give each melody its color — and that set the sound of the prayers each Shabbat.
חזנות
Hazzanut
The art of leading the congregation in prayer, with the melodies, the words and the dignity the role deserves.
Our mission
Our mission is to keep the voice of Syrian hazzanut alive in every generation: to give each student a love for the music of our tefillot, the skill to sing it beautifully, and the confidence to carry it forward in the synagogue, at the Shabbat table, and at every family celebration.
